Shatkarmas:

Shatkarmas, the 6 yogic cleansing techniques, harmonize our Ida (feminine energy) and Pingala (masculine energy) nadi (energy channels) the two main flows of prana (vital energy), resulting in physical and mental purity and balance.

The Shatkarmas also balances the three main controlling energies (Dosha or Prakriti) of the body (according to Ayurveda), that is Vata (Air + Space element), Pitta (Fire  element), and Kapha (Water + Earth element), which gets imbalanced because of our daily lifestyle, diet and natural causes of the environment, creating disorders  in the body giving rise to diseases and illness.

The 6 Shatkarmas defined in various yogic texts are:

  • Dhauti – A Cleansing technique of upper stomach

  • Neti – Nasal cleansing technique

  • Nauli – Massages abdominal organs

  • Basti – Cleansing of the large intestine

  • Kapalbhati – Forehead shining breathing technique

  • Trataka – Eye muscles purification practice

 

 

Shatkarmas practiced during these 14 days:

 

  • Jal Neti - In this practice we purify our nostrils, the two main Nadis that is Ida & Pingla, by pouring lukewarm salty water with neti pot.

Benefits:-

  1. Treats Respiratory tract conditions

  2. Eliminates toxins from the body

  3. Imporves Nervous Health

  4. Practise for ENT care

  5. Activating & Influencing the Vocal cords and other related Nadis

 

  • Rubber Neti - Same like Jal Neti, in this practice also we purify our nostrils, the two main Nadis that is Ida & Pingla. But, using a rubber catheter instead of salty lukewarm water. Here, alubricated catheter is inserted through the nose & out through the mouth, clearing the complete passage and eliminating excess Kapha.

Benefits:-

  1. Deviated nasal septum reduced

  2. Lightness in breathing

  3.  Improves Vision

  4. ENT care

  5. Alleviate Inflammation and excessive mucus

 

 

 

 

  • Vatakrama Kapalbhati - In this practice we purify our pranamaya kosha, one of the five sheathes consisting of our vital energy force by using air. This techinic is defined in two different ways in two different texts namely, Gheranda Samhita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika. This practice accompanied by Jala neti in starting.

 

Benefits:-

  1. Eliminates phlegm and mucus

  2. Achieve mental concentration and stability

  3. Activate respiratory system

  4. Good for respiratory ailments,chronic bronchitis and tuberculosis

  5. Awaken the brain centers

 

 

  • Vyutkrama Kapalbhati - In this Practice we use lukewarm salty water as in neti, by taking the lukewarm salty water in through the nose, holding it in the throat and then expelling it through the mouth.

 

Benefits:-

  1. Helping to experience the taste of awakening of bindu chakra

  2. Cleans the mucous from the nasal cavity and throat

  3. Used as an alternative for people having difficulty practising Khechari Mudra

 

 

 

 

  • Sheetkrama Kapalbhati - This is just the opposite of Vyutkarma kapalbhati. Here, we suck in water through the mouth with a hissing sound & expel it through the nose.

Benefits:

  1. Avoid signs of old age

  2. Removes Kapha dosha (excess mucus)

  3. Its said, this practise makes one look like “Kamadeva” (the God of Love)

 

 

  • Trataka -  Along with being a purification practise, this is also a tantric method of meditation that involves staring at a single point usually a candle/ flame.

Benefits:

  1. Purifies & Strengthens eye muscles

  2. Treating eye disorders

  3. Relieves insomnia

  4. Aids in treating depression

  5. Calms the mind & Improves concentration

  6. Develops intuition

 

  • Vaman Dhauti (Kunjal Kriya) - In this practice we clean our digestive track from the mouth till the stomach. Here, we drink salty lukewarm water in a quantity (around 6 six glasses) and is then vomited out.

 

Benefits:

  1. Keeps digestive system healthy

  2. Removed acidity & digestive ailments

  3. Has profound effect on nervous system

  4. Regulates Kapha & Pitta disorders (excess mucus & digestive fire)

  5. Eradicates bad breath

In this retreat we will be experiencing the real yogic and Himalayan village lifestyle. With all of us not just practising and healing but also participating in daily routine activities.

 

3 Pointers to keep in mind:

As mentioned, in this retreat we will be living a yogic lifestyle like a family in an authentic Himalayan village. So, below are some pointers:

  • There are NO attached washrooms. The washrooms are located like 10 steps away from our sleeping and eating area.

The reason for this is, in traditional times the toilets were considered impure to be situated next to rooms or kitchen. Thus, were always at a distance in the home premise itself.

  • Just like a village family, we will be doing the cleaning and cooking together with help to each other. – (Self-sustainability)

Activities like washing and cutting of vegetables, cooking of food, collecting of firewood and cleaning will all be done by ALL of us together - KARMA YOGA PRACTISE.

  • Carry warm clothes. As the retreat is in the Himalayas the weather will be mostly cold.

Program

Here’s a sample program schedule. Please note that none of the activities in the schedule is compulsory, if you feel like taking more ‘me’ time alone, feel free to do it anytime!

  • Your arrival to Rishikesh City. (At our accomodation (hotel/guesthouse))

  • 10:00 am: Breakfast time (cafe around Ganga river)

  • 01:00 pm: Rishikesh city tour (sacred temple/waterfall/river beach, etc.)

  • 05:00 pm: Ganga Aarti visit (Praying and offering to river)

  • 08:30 pm- Dinner time

After dinner, you all can go back to your accommodations or do whatever you feel like. Then we will be meeting you the next day (DAY 2).

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 30% of the total price.

  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.

  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
